On March 29, China General Chamber of Commerce – U.S.A. (CGCC) and Covington & Burling LLP (Covington) jointly hosted “Interpretation on the New Administration’s Global Trade Policy—Asian Perspective and China Focus” at Covington in Washington D.C. As the first event of “CGCC Washington Insiders Legal and Policy Series” in 2017, the event was attended by about 20 distinguished representatives from the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. and CGCC board members, including Zhu Hong, Minister and Chief of the Office of Economic and Commercial Affairs of the Chinese Embassy in the U.S. Two keynote speakers, P. Larson, Senior International Policy Advisor of Covington, former U.S. Under Secretary of State for Economics, and John K. Veroneau, Partner of Covington Washington office, former Ambassador and Deputy United States Trade Representative (USTR), together discussed and analyzed the Trump administration’s likely global trade policies, especially regarding China and Asia Pacific.
Later in the evening, the delegation of CGCC participated in the 20th Annual Statesmanship Awards Dinner hosted by the United States Association of Former Members of Congress (FMC) and extensively communicated with prominent U.S. politicians and business executives to build up better cooperation. The theme for this year’s FMC Awards Dinner was “STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math): Empowering Tomorrow’s Technology Leaders”. In recognition of their outstanding work in the STEM and computer science field, FMC presented the Statesmanship Award to Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA), Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) and Senator Mark Warner (D-VA). Microsoft took home the Corporate Award and Code.org was the recipient of the Civic Award.
Last year, CGCC hosted two Legal and Policy Series events: “China-U.S. Intellectual Property Cooperation Dialogue & Chinese Brands Going Global Forum” and “Working with CFIUS on U.S. Investment Transactions”, establishing a platform for CGCC members to exchange ideas on hotly debated topics in US-China economic and trade relations. This year, CGCC will continue working with first-tier think tanks, law firms and Fortune 500 companies to further integrate resources and provide CGCC members with in-depth and timely analysis on US-China trade- and investment-related issues.
